Aside from calling the house after the artist Else Alfelt the client had two demands for this 190-car parking house in suburban Copenhagen. They chose the split-level as the basic layout concept. And they wanted a roof accessible to the public.
A "split level" parkinghouse is the most basic and the cheapest way to do multilayered parking. The ramp is a integrated part of the structure so that you go up and down through the house in a ongoing spiral movement.
The team at Open Platform saw the spiral, and the idea of dooing a giant snail house, as a way of adapting all the demands of the client to the specific site, a way of connecting the roof garden to the street level and a way of creating a structure that relates to the imagery of Else Alfelt.
...it´s spiraling like the shell of a snail
